SRF Research and Training Centres Profile

Based in Mbarara City, Uganda, SRF Research and Training Centres (SRF-RTC) is a non-profit organization committed to advancing Africa’s development through research, innovation, and capacity building.

Though independent, SRF-RTC operates alongside Soar Research Foundation (SRF), a for-profit Contract Research Organization that began as a grassroots consultancy in 2010 and was formally incorporated in 2019.

SRF provides sustainability support to SRF-RTC through income generated from consultancy, training, project evaluation, infrastructure rental, and dissemination services.

At the heart of SRF-RTC is its flagship mentorship program — the Support Initiative for African Researchers (SIFAR). This initiative nurtures pupils, students, and young professionals into skilled researchers and problem-solvers, equipping them to lead sustainable development across the continent.

The Centre houses specialized units for clinical research, grants management, community engagement, regulatory affairs, data and laboratory services, pharmacy, logistics, IT, innovation, and training.

SRF-RTC actively contributes to national research forums, partners with organizations like Uganda Red Cross Society, and participates in continental consortia such as GLISTEN, which promotes clinical trials in non-communicable diseases.

Our multidisciplinary team brings expertise in epidemiology, clinical trials, implementation science, research regulation, reproductive health, diagnostics, and health systems strengthening. Many of our staff also serve on ethics committees and national research fora, helping shape policy and translate research into action.

SRF-RTC welcomes collaborations, co-implementation, subcontracted research, and consultation opportunities. We also offer internships, mentorship, and mobility programs for both national and international researchers.

Our research spans public health, infectious and non-communicable diseases, maternal and child health, digital health, climate and health, microbiology, One Health, and more.

SRF Grants Management

The SRF and Training Centres (SRF-RTCs) has Grants Management Guidelines and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) that provide a formal framework for the solicitation, awarding, management, monitoring, reporting, and closeout of research grants handled at SRF Research and Training Centres.

SRF-RTCs hold primary responsibility for grant administration, financial stewardship, compliance, and reporting to external donors while maintaining alignment with SRF institutional standards and guidelines.

These guidelines ensure:

Efficient utilization of grant resources; Compliance with donor, institutional, national, and international regulations; Accountability, transparency, and equitable financial practices; Strengthening of research governance and capacity within RTCs.

SRF-RTCs is registered on SAM.gov and so can receive US grants like NIH

SOAR RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP PROGRAMME (SRFP)

Building the Next Generation of African Researchers.
The Soar Research Fellowship Programme (SRFP) is a six-month intensive research capacity-strengthening program offered by SRF-Research and Training Centers (SRF-RTCs) through the Soar Research Foundation. The program is designed for early-career researchers, clinicians, public health professionals, postgraduate students, and aspiring academics seeking practical research skills, mentorship, and real-world experience in health research.

The Fellowship combines structured training, one-on-one mentorship, participation in ongoing research projects, scientific writing, proposal development, data analysis, and research leadership development. Fellows learn by doing, working alongside experienced researchers and participating in active research projects implemented through SRF-RTCs and its national and international research networks.

Through a structured curriculum, Fellows gain competencies in epidemiology, biostatistics, research methods, implementation science, scientific writing, proposal development, grant writing, research coordination, project management, digital research tools, and knowledge translation. We also provide client-tailored curriculum based on one’s needs.

A unique feature of the programme is the mentored operational research project, where each Fellow develops and implements a research project using secondary data (routine clinical or research data). Fellows are guided through the complete research cycle from research question development and protocol writing to data analysis, report writing, manuscript development, and scientific presentation.

Each Fellow is assigned a primary research mentor and a technical mentor and gains access to scientific seminars, journal clubs, mentorship reviews, and collaborative learning opportunities.

By the end of the fellowship, participants are expected to produce:
1. One approved research proposal
2. One completed data analysis project
3. One research report
4. One conference-style presentation
5. One draft scientific manuscript
6. One policy or technical brief
7. Participation in at least one grant development process

The Fellowship is ideal for individuals preparing for Master's, PhD, Postdoctoral training, research careers, academic appointments, programme leadership, and grant-funded research opportunities.

From Learner to Research Leader: Gain the Skills, Mentorship, and Experience to Conduct, Publish, and Lead High-Impact Research in Africa

Programme Duration:

6 Months (Physical only or hybrid)

Fellowship Fee:

USD 500 per month (USD 3,000 for the full programme)

Certification:

Fellows who successfully complete all programme requirements receive a Certificate of Completion from SRF-Research and Training Centres.
