Dr. Elna Owembabazi, PhD, Senior Research Associate – SRF Research and Training Centres (SRF-RTC), is a biomedical researcher and clinical anatomist with extensive expertise in laboratory-based investigations, molecular biology, histopathology, immunohistochemistry, and advanced bioimage analysis. Her research spans reproductive biology, addiction science, non-communicable diseases, and clinical anatomy, with growing interests in translational research and innovation.

Dr. Owembabazi holds a PhD in Anatomical Sciences from the University of the Witwatersrand, a Master of Science in Human Anatomy, and a Bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Science from Kampala International University. She has complemented her academic training with specialized courses in gene therapy and related molecular approaches.

At SRF-RTC, she works with interdisciplinary teams to design, implement, and manage research studies that advance the organisation’s mission of strengthening research capacity and improving health outcomes. Her role includes scientific oversight, mentoring emerging researchers, and contributing to the development of context-specific, multidisciplinary research programmes.

Dr. Owembabazi is also a Lecturer in Human Anatomy at Kampala International University, where she teaches histology, embryology, and immunohistochemical techniques. She has previously taught at the University of Johannesburg and the University of the Witwatersrand, contributing to cadaver dissection programmes and laboratory anatomy instruction.

She has a strong record in postgraduate supervision across multiple disciplines, including anatomy, surgery, physiology, and human genetics. Her students’ work spans toxicology, phytomedicine, reproductive biology, and neurological research, reflecting her broad scientific leadership.

Dr. Owembabazi has authored and co-authored numerous peer-reviewed publications in reputable international journals. Her work includes machine learning bioimage analysis, reproductive toxicology, immunohistochemistry, alcohol and cART interactions, neuroprotection, and male fertility research.

She is an active member of several professional and scientific bodies, including the Uganda Anatomical Association, Allied Health Professionals Council, Women in Neuroscience of Uganda, and the American Society of Gene and Cell Therapy. She is also engaged in community outreach and health promotion initiatives.
